JAGA's animal welfare barn - Awarded the Styrian Animal Welfare Prize!

In December 2020, the Neuhold family put their low-emission pig welfare barn into operation. A well thought-out concept with different zones and pens allows the animals to follow their natural needs.

    The project at a glance

Josef and Christina Neuhold live and work in idyllic Leitersdorf in southern Styria. In between meadows, hills and fields, they built a low-emission pig welfare barn out of their own conviction just less than two years ago, where their herb-fed pigs have been bred and marketed directly ever since. Their pig breeding completes the concept of JAGA’s Steirerei: in addition to meat specialities, breads, oil & vinegar, fruits & vegetables, eggs, cheese, spirits and much more are produced and directly marketed in the in-house farm. Everything from our own, natural, environmentally friendly production.

What makes JAGA’s animal welfare barn so special?

The pigs can follow their natural needs 24/7

Different zones and pens allow the animals to choose the right place for every need.

    • Resting area inside the barn with straw bedding, cool in summer and warm in winter.
    • Covered outdoor area, freely accessible
    • Feeding place inside the outdoor area with freely accessible fodder
    • Manure area made of soft plastic slats: Pigs naturally separate their manure area from other living areas.

The freely accessible outdoor area is covered with WSS1 Wind Protection Systems. This allows the air and light supply to be flexibly controlled to maintain optimum climatic conditions.

    Less emissions

In the JAGA animal welfare barn, a pioneering project has led to reduced emissions in the pig farming. Up to 80% of ammonia emissions can be saved through special urine/faeces separation, adapted phase feeding and free ventilation with microclimate areas. This in turn has a positive effect on the barn climate. And of course it also pleases the neighbours.
