Improved animal welfare thanks to digitalisation: smart curtains in the Füreder dairy barn
Fresh air, plenty of light and optimal temperatures – all controllable via smartphone. The Füreder family’s new dairy barn shows how digital technology and animal welfare go hand in hand.

Why a new stable became necessary
The Füreder family has been farming in the idyllic Mühlviertel region for generations. But the old free-range barn had long since reached its limits: it was too small, there was not enough space for the animals, and milking took a lot of time. ‘Back then, it often took two of us to work in the barn for our 30 dairy cows. It just became too cramped,’ recalls Mr Füreder.
The decision to build a new barn was made quickly – and it was clear from the outset that the new barn should above all offer the cows more freedom of movement and well-being. Today, it houses 63 dairy cows, which move around freely, enjoy fresh air and are kept in a modern environment.
Technology meets animal welfare
Digitalisation in everyday stable life
Cows that love the climate
The benefits of modern technology for cows are evident every day. With open ventilation and a constant supply of fresh air, the animals feel comfortable – and this is reflected in their milk yield and health.
‘The cows love the ventilation, you can tell immediately,’ says Füreder. For him, it’s clear that greater animal welfare also means greater success in milk production.
FAQ`s
What are the advantages of controlling the stable climate via an app?
The app control allows curtains, gates, lighting and ventilation to be conveniently operated from a smartphone. This saves farmers time and effort and allows them to react immediately to changes in weather or climate.
How does digitalisation in livestock housing affect animal welfare?
A digital system ensures an optimal barn climate with fresh air, plenty of light and stable temperatures. Cows feel more comfortable, stay healthier and often produce more milk.
Does the technology also make work easier for farmers?
Yes, many tasks can be automated using the app controls. Gates, curtains, lighting, PV systems, feeding and much more can be controlled via mobile phone – without having to leave the tractor or walk to each switch.
Can a digital control system be individually adapted to the operation?
Absolutely. The AGROTEL Smart Clima app control system is connected to sensors that measure the indoor and outdoor climate in real time. This allows the barn climate to be regulated fully automatically. Depending on the desired target temperature and the specified maximum wind speed, the curtains open and close automatically to maintain a constant climate.
