Modern pig farming - comfort and well-being for humans and animals.
The Hofmeyer family runs a pig fattening farm with almost 1500 animals. The new animal welfare barn combines innovation and economic efficiency in the most modern way.
The project at a glance
The Hofmeyer family’s modern outdoor climate-controlled barn in northern Hessen is unparalleled. Two identically constructed barn wings with a length of 60 m and a width of almost 23 m offer capacity for 1500 fattening places.
The farmer’s aim: to create an environment in which the animals feel comfortable without compromising the profitability of the farm. The space available per animal is 1.5 m² , which is twice as much as required by law. To ensure that the animals can meet their natural needs as well as possible, the barn area was divided into three zones:
1. Lying area
2. Active area with level floor
3. Manure disposal area
In addition, the innovative fattening farm relies on an animal-friendly outdoor climate concept. Air conditioning is ensured by an AGROTEL curtain system and an adjustable light-ventilation ridge.
Natural ventilation – chimney effect
The AGROTEL light and ventilation ridge completes the natural ventilation concept with roll-up side wall ventilation systems. The adjustable ridge construction creates a chimney effect that draws the stale air outside. This makes optimal use of the barn’s natural thermals. Animals and farmer also benefit from additional daylight.
All in all, the fattening farm is a showcase model for perspective-oriented pig farming: animal-friendly, environmentally friendly, consumer-oriented and competitive.
